Moscow and Nicosia have reached an agreement over the use of the “Papandreou” air base in Paphos, in a similar arrangement that was agreed with France and Germany. According to a report in Phileleftheros the issue was discussed yesterday during a meeting between the countries’ foreign ministers, Sergei Lavrov and Ioannis Kasoulides, which took place in St. Petersburg.
The agreement expands the island’s co-operation with Russian military forces which also allows Moscow’s warships to refuel at Limassol Port. The agreement will become effective immediately and be formally ratified when Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Nicos Anastasiadis next meet. The exact date for their meeting has yet to be finalised.
