Luca Bertelli, Chief Exploration Officer of ENI said we believe is another Zohr in the EEZ of Cyprus
Luca Bertelli, Chief Exploration Officer of ENI has expressed the hope that his company will start drilling by the end of the year and appeared optimistic that discoveries similar to Zohr will be made in the blocks within Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone said in Eastern Mediterranean Gas Conference (EMGC) opening keynote speech.
Egypt’s Zohr discovered in exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in 2015. The field holds an estimated 30 trillion cubic feet of gas in place, and is the largest ever natural gas find in the Mediterranean surpassing Israel’s Leviathan.
The discovery of Zohr has attracted new interest in the exploration also in Cyprus’ EEZ and the recent round that has been launched attracted new companies in Cyprus, he said.
Asked to estimate the size of the discovery, he said that it is difficult to make estimations before drilling. According to the ENI official “the most important point is to start drilling again.”
When asked if ENI has set the dates for drilling, he said that “we don’t have exact schedule days but our effort is to start as soon as we can.”
“It will require some time depending when the new contract will be signed but we hope to start drilling before the year end,” he noted.
He did not rule out the construction of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) storage and processing facility in Cyprus.
Another possibility might be laying a long pipeline connecting Cyprus to mainland Europe; though feasible, Bertelli said such a project required massive investments.
